CARUGGI

NORTHERN ITALIAN CUISINE
IN THE HEART OF GEELONG

Caruggi is the medieval centre of Genoa, translating as little alleyway in Genovese dialect, it is the labyrinth that meanders from the old port arcades of Sottoripe through ancient Genoa connecting small squares and opening up to reveal Cathedrals. The Caruggi have always housed small artisanal shops and many still serve typical dishes and foods as they have done for 100’s of years.

Caruggi seves classic Northern Italian with Ligurian specialities. In the true spirit of the Caruggi we have lots of little pockets and alcoves for you to discover and settle into.

Massimiliano the Chef and owner originates from the town of Recco which is famous for Focaccia di Recco. Focaccia col formaggio has become one of our most popular dishes and has a history that dates back to the tenth century.

Todays version is said to have been created by Reccos Ristorante Manulina in the late 1800s. The ristorante keeps the tradition going today and the town has formed a consortium to protect the product that carries a DOP. To serve Foccacia di Recco you must have approval from the consortium and use a specific recipe. Surrounding towns such as Camogli call it Focacccia col formaggio.
Massi did his early apprenticeship years at the Ristorante Manulina and you may spot their Ristorante del Buon Ricordo plate on one of our shelves.

Come and enjoy without the trip to Italy.

Each Month we celebrate an Italian grape or Region June is the perfect month to discover Montalbera:

The Spirit of Monferrato in Three Native Grapes

  • Montalbera stands as one of Piedmont’s most expressive estates, championing the rare and characterrich varieties that define the hills of Monferrato. Their work with Grignolino, Ruchè, and Timorasso has helped elevate these onceoverlooked grapes into some of Italy’s most intriguing wines.

    23 Timorasso: Piedmont’s White Wine Renaissance g 20 b 80

Timorasso is Piedmont’s comeback story — a nearly extinct white grape revived for its minerality, salinity, and ageworthy structure. Montalbera’s interpretation is crisp yet textural, with notes of pear, citrus peel, and almond.

    21 Grignolino: The Pale Red with a Rebel Heart g16.25 b 65

Grignolino is one of Piedmont’s most misunderstood treasures — an indigenous grape almost lost due to its finicky ripening patterns and the fashion for bolder wines. Its pale in colour, but fiercely expressive. Montalbera treats it with the respect it deserves, coaxing out its signature rose petal aromatics, vibrant red cherry, and fine, persistent tannins.

    23 Ruchè: The Perfumed Jewel of Castagnole Monferrato g 15 b 60

Ruchè is the grape that put Montalbera on the global map with the help of the local priest discovering a row of forgotten vines in a church yard. Its intensely aromatic and unmistakably unique, it offers wild rose, violet, red berries, and a whisper of white pepper. Montalbera is the largest and most influential producer of Ruchè, shaping its modern identity.
